Fort St. James Hospital receives Indigenous name
FORT ST. JAMES – The new hospital in Fort St. James received its name today: Nats’oojeh. A Dakelh language word, this means “everyone healing,” and the deeper meaning behind this conveys healing through medicine, holistic care, looking after loved ones, and helping each other.
“Nats’oojeh Hospital and Health Centre is more than just a building, it’s a place where community, culture and care come together under one roof,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “I’m grateful to the Elders and experts who have guided the process of selecting a name for this facility that reflects the values of the community it serves.”
It was Osborne’s first time in Fort St. James, and she took the opportunity to reflect on the journey it took to finally get the new hospital built.
“The pandemic had impacts on a number of different infrastructure projects and supply chain issues, delays. That’s why we persisted, and I am so privileged to be able to visit today and to be able to see this place literally going from Atco trailers that were almost glued together to a modern, state of the art facility where physicians, nurses and other health care professionals can provide the top quality care that people in the region deserve,” Osborne said.
